Now read about a recent course:
Since 1998 we have run courses for groups
of Austrian adults, all of whom were connected in some way with
teacher training colleges in Austria. The majority of the participants
were teachers or teacher trainers, but some were partners of teachers
attending the course, with no professional connection with education.
Everybody wanted an English language improvement course, but they
were a mixed ability group with different reasons for needing
English.
So, after considerable negotiation – including one tutor
going to Vienna to meet the participants and plan the course – the
two course tutors, Peter Maingay and David Eastment, designed
a
course that looked like this:
Mornings: General English in two groups, with teachers responding
all the time to individual and small group needs.
Afternoons: Study Centre work with three teachers available to
advise and teach small groups and individuals. This in fact became
a regular lesson with one tutor for participants with a lower level
of English and small group, short tutorials for the others. The
focus of these short tutorials was always chosen by the participants.
Evenings: a very busy social programme, often with the families
the participants were staying with.
On this course, some participants chose to stay with families and
some chose to stay in guesthouses.
Their coments:
"Just perfect. But sometimes I felt a bit guilty that I was living
in such a wonderful place."
"I enjoyed every part of this course. Thank you."
